The Canadian Competition Bureau announced on the 26th June 2009, that it had fined Air France C$4m (Canadian dollars) for a price fixing conspiracy on Canadian air cargo routes. The Bureau also fined KLM C$5m and Martinair C$1m - Air France and KLM are now single merged company, with Martinair a subsidiary. Martinair, Air France & KLM were fined for communications with each other about the timing and amount of fuel surcharges on air cargo exports from Canada between 2002 and 2006. The airlines received reduced fines for cooperating with the investigation.
The fines come hard on the heels of the tragic Air France flight 447 which crashed in the middle of the Atlantic on its way from Brazil to Paris.
