Hambleden Village

Situated near London to the north-east (3 miles) of Henley on Thames, Hambleden is a small village known for its brick and flint architecture and being the birthplace of Lord Cardigan. The Hambleden lock near the village is one of the most picturesque crossings of the River Thames.

Hambleden's Church of Saint Mary the Virgin dates back to the 14th Century.

Because only God is perfect, artists would leave an imperfection in their works. If you look carefully you will see that a wooden panel on the one side of the Church is unfinished compared to the corresponding panel on the other side of the Church.

The Hambleden Church contains a memorial to Cope D'Oyley, his wife and their 5 sons and 5 daughters.

Hambleden Church of St Mary the Virgin

Lord Cardigan

James Thomas Brudnell, the seventh Earl of Cardigan, was born in Hambleden on the 16th October 1797. Brudnell is famous for having led the disastrous charge of the Light Brigade of the British Army in the Crimean war on the 25th October 1854.
